Type-In Traffic - The most potent type of traffic!
Once regarded to be a very well kept secret in the webmaster community, type-in traffic is no longer surrounded by mystery. Type-in traffic occurs when surfers access a website by simply guessing it's domain name, and typing it directly into their web browser. Statistically, over 60% of all Internet traffic is a result of a domain name being directly typed into the browser, without the use of a search engine (this is also called Direct Navigation). Most of the time, due to their high cost, a natural keyword .com domain for any category leads to either a large, reputable website or a directory of related sites. The best way to capitalize on this type of traffic is to own a .com domain name that represents a natural keyword for a product or service that you are selling. Owning a keyword .com domain name is the equivalent to owning real estate instead of renting (when you depend on search engines for your traffic you are in effect renting your traffic from them). We mention .com because other extensions are simply not being typed in as often as .com. For example, the term "loans" will yield approximately 5,000 type-ins for the domain loans.com, and only 25 for loans.org. So do not be tempted by all the other extensions, as they simply DO NOT deliver the traffic like .com does.

Since most if not all of this type of domains are already registered, the only way to secure them is to make a purchase offer to their current owner. We recommend getting the owner's e-mail address from the Whois record, and contacting them directly. For example, if your company sells videos, you would want to attempt to purchase the domain "videos.com" from its current owner to have a perpetual flow of free traffic searching for videos to your website. As for what price to offer, normally your offer should be directly related to the amount of traffic you think the domain receives. We recommend the following tools to determine the estimated traffic to any domain name:

  • Alexa - This website ranks websites by traffic in descending order (the lower the Alexa rating, the higher the traffic). Normally a rating of 1,000,000 or lower means the website receives over 500 unique visitors a day.
  • Statbrain - Statbrain uses different resources on the web combined with mathematical and statistical methods to estimate how many visits a website has. Statbrain estimates the number of visits that a website has based on offsite factors like backlinks, Alexa Rank etc. Statbrain does not have access to log files or any counter information. The number of visits that Statbrain estimates gives you an idea of the number of visits that a website has, but not the exact visitor number.

Prices for type-in domains typically range from $0.15 to over $1.00 per unique visitor per day for one year (all traffic to the domain from search engines and links should be ignored when estimating value under this model, as that traffic normally disappears shortly after you purchase the name), depending on the industry the domain is in. For example, a domain which gets 100 unique visitors per day should be worth anywhere from $5,475 (.15 x 100 x 365) to $36,500 or more. Typically, the higher the acquisition cost per customer via pay-per-click or conventional advertising, the higher the price of a type-in domain in that industry. It may seem that some values based on the above model may be high, but when compared to the cost of traffic acquisition through other means, it is very comparable. For example, a company that spends $30,000 on a 30 second TV spot could spend the same amount purchasing a keyword domain. The difference is that a TV ad will only be seen once, while the traffic from a type-in domain will continue for ever.

This guide was designed to help your website achieve higher and more accurate rankings on search engines. The terms and definitions below relate to most aspects of search engine indexing and ranking of websites.
Spider / Bot:
A program used by search engines to visit and index websites. Search engines regularly send these spiders to the sites in their database and new sites that were submitted to verify accuracy of the index.


Ranking:
When a user types in a keyword in a search engine, the response usually contains a list of websites which the search engine determines to be most relevant. The list of sites appears in the order of their relevance (ranking). There could be thousands of matching choices, so to generate any traffic, your site should be in at least the top 30.

Page Title:
The single most important line of text at the top of each web page identifying the name of the page or the entire site. The page title often determines how search engines index and rank a website. The page title should be short and to the point.

Domain Name:
A domain name is almost as important as the page title, as most search engines give higher rankings to sites with domain names relevant to their content. This is only one of the many reasons why having a good domain name is extremely important to the success of your site. It is also recommended that you have multiple domain names forwarded to your website, as different domain names increase the odds of search engines indexing your site under more topics and keywords. Our alternative domains are available for registering most easy names, such as common dictionary words and phrases, to substantially increase the ranking of your site in any given category. For example, if your domain name is mycooljewelrystore.com, you could register jewelry.web.st, and your site should place higher than other sites with longer names, under the keyword "jewelry".


Meta Tags:
Meta tags are embedded into web pages and are invisible to users. They are only visible to search engine spiders and assist them in determining the relevant nature of a website's content. Each page of a website that you want listed on search engines must have meta tags.

Description Tag:

A meta tag listing the description of a web page. The description tag should be no more than two sentences long, and describe the exact purpose of the website.

Keyword Tag:
A meta tag listing the relevant keywords a user may enter when trying to find a specific category on a search engine. You should have no more than 18 unique keywords or short phrases separated by commas, with any single word never repeated more than 7 times.

Page Text:
The body of text on a webpage is also very important in search engine ranking. Most search engines can only read text on a page, not images, java applets or embedded objects. This is why sometimes the most plain looking website will be ranked before a fancy, graphics based site. Therefore, try to have more relevant text (matching your keywords, description and page title) wherever possible.

Link Popularity:
Another factor used by search engines for ranking is site popularity on the Internet. This is the number of links to your site on other websites. The only way to achieve this is to exchange links with as many related sites as possible, or launch multiple cross linking websites yourself. Typically, the link to your website should not be your URL only, but a short keyword or phrase that represents your most important keyword that you would like to be found under in search engines.
